Notes:
Iodine has a black color and is crystalline. It is used in medicine, in the
synthesis of some organic materials, in the manufacture of dyes, in analytical
chemistry, and in photography. At room temperature iodine sublimes into a
violet vapor that irritates the eyes, nose, and throat. It dissolves in
alcohol and partially in water to make a brown colored solution. Iodine is
essential in the human body but only in small amounts. Most of it is found in
the thyroid gland.
