  13. Iodine has a black color and is crystalline. It is used in medicine, in the 
  14. synthesis of some organic materials, in the manufacture of dyes, in analytical 
  15. chemistry, and in photography. At room temperature iodine sublimes into a 
  16. violet vapor that irritates the eyes, nose, and throat. It dissolves in 
  17. alcohol and partially in water to make a brown colored solution. Iodine is 
  18. essential in the human body but only in small amounts. Most of it is found in 
  19. the thyroid gland.
